11 April 2015

Arrived home to see the river had broken up! AKA river run of the year trip
of the year. Headed west on the Habitant from near the legion, towards the
Hwy 358 bridge.  eBird checklist below.

I also got some cool photos of what I think were microtine tunnels exposed
by the broken ice, as well as muskrat middens in the ice. Photos at link

First muskrat of the season, feeding under/perhaps on multiflora rose
bushes on the south bank of the Habitant River. Without question the
fattest muskrat I've ever seen. I thought it was a beaver until I saw it's
tail. It made it's way up the ridge, where it was pursued three times
unsuccessfully by a red-tailed hawk. It would have been a tough go, the
muskrat was absolutely enormous.
