Index of Subjects Hi Steve That's the link I used to pull the some of the snow data together.. but found it via a "back door". Hadn't noticed the Historical Weather button before. That will let you build the dataset... Would have thought there would have been an easier way to do it, but as you point out, once you capture that column (or other cloumns of interest ikn a spread sheet you have them for future reference. Thanks for the tip. Andrew, Keith, others, You undoubtedly know this site already, but when we make a trip to Halls Harbour I usually check the Govt Canada weather site, for Kentville. The following may be too cumbersome for your purposes, but if you don't know already, as a tryout go to... http://weather.gc.ca/forecast/canada/index/_e.html?id=NS -> click on Kentville (or any other named place) on the map that comes up -> at the bottom of the page that comes up (just for for Kentville), click on [Historical Weather] -> this brings up the current month of 2015 March, and the third column from the end is [snow on the ground, cm], for each day in March 2015 If you could copy this column easily into a spreadsheet like Excel, it would be simple to subtract the total cm for a particular day from that for the day before, to get the daily snow fallen if any. Simple cut and paste into Excel failed for me (wrong column delimiter?); I forgot to check another spreadsheet that I use to see if cut and paste works there. You can however get their whole spreadsheet for any month to download into Excel from the [Download Data, CSV option] menu on the right. Far too much data, lots to delete, cumbersome but possible. I checked this back as far as 2005 March, and the [snow on the ground, cm] column is still there. I think the record goes back as far as 1996. In March 2005, [snow on the ground, cm] had reached permanent zero by 27 March -- great, only 9 days to go! Hi Keith I ran into a similar problem when trying to get some snowfall data for the province. Mean data seemed to be available, but getting synoptic data even for the last several months for a couple of places was a challenge.. To boot, a number of "un-official" sources provided contradictory information. Did manage to extract that, with the exception of the South of the province, we seem to have about 30-40% more snow than "average" this year, even with Oct, Nov and Dec being warm Andrew ________________________________________ From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] on behalf of Keith Lowe [mythos25@live.com] Sent: March-18-15 5:09 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: RE: [NatureNS] Worst winter ever in Nova Scotia? For NS it probably wouldn't be the worst winter by any statistical criterial because November and December were mild without any snow. I wish there was a more comprehensive site for weather statistics but as far as I'm aware of there is not a great source of information anywhere. The Weather Network has some stats for each community--click Forecasts & Reports/Long Term/Statistics. The last I heard Boston and Saint John are the only places in the NE to break their all-time snow records so far this winter but Charlottetown was getting close too. But I don't remember a January - March stretch this bad in Halifax before. Almost every day has been below normal, we're not getting any thawing cycles, and we're having an unusually high number of severe wind chill days and I don't even want to mention the word snow (though I will say that Halifax has more than doubled its March average in the last 3 days). Also it is not quite NS wide, as often the case the SW tip of NS is getting off quite easy compared to the rest of the province. I was looking at the NovaScotiaWebCam for Cape Forchu yesterday and it was showing mostly bare ground. They got some today but far less than us. It's an intriguing question isn't it? When was the worst winter ever in NS? Total precipitation, days of snow, temperatures below zero C? We all have our ideas of what a bad winter is. Does anyone know how to find out "statistically" if this is a bad winter? (in comparison to others on record) Chris Peters
