Hi Richard,
If you erase the lines it does look like the location of raisins in =
a plum pudding; no clear trend I agree.

  Hi,

For the last few years we have had 2-3 Flickers visiting our feeders =
daily all winter. I can't remember Flickers over-wintering except very =
rarely 20 years ago. Perhaps it's because we now put out bird pies, =
which they seem to like. Here is a graph of Flicker numbers per =
party-hour on Xmas counts in NS for the last 20 years.

The numbers seem to fluctuate greatly, with no obvious pattern that I =
can see,

  Richard

It is difficult to imagine that an abundance of food in winter =
would not eventually modify migration, provided history had not narrowed =
variation excessively.
I have wondered for years why Flickers were not more abundant =
here. It can't be a shortage of ants unless they avoid those species =
which are abundant. If it is feed in their traditional winter range that =
has limited numbers then perhaps they will become more common.
Do you have Spruce in your woodlot and are they healthy ? Many =
of my Spruce (both Red & White) on shallow or poorly drained Morristown =
Loam have been in decline for up to ~25 years.=20

ok - its just a play on words.....=20

We've been hosting a Northern Flicker at our feeders this winter.
Yesterday my wife Heather heard a noise in the back yard and =
looked out to see TWO Northern Flickers battling for a spot on our suet =
feeder.=20

It seems odd to me that Flickers are now overwintering in the =
Maritimes.
Maybe it is a new climate change trend or perhaps they have always =
been capable of withstanding our cold temps but never had such an =
abundant winter food source like they do now, given all the feeding =
stations around.
