He remarked on the absence of snow in the woods this winter. I told him that I enjoyed snowshoeing but hadn't found conditions in my area suitable for a number of winters. He thought about that for a bit, and then remarked that ten or more years ago, nearly every family on his road owned at least one snowmobile, and now he didn't think there was a single one. Just an anecdote, I know, and not data, but still telling, I think. Patricia L. So I checked the historical weather stats on Environment Canada for several places and it is not unusual for the mainland. On January 24th the average amount of snow depth in 0 cm at the Halifax Airport, 2 cm at Shearwater, trace amount in Kentville, 1 cm in Amherst, 0 cm in Yarmouth. Cape Breton bucks this trend with significant average snow depth around this time. Though the average depth is greater around the middle of January. > > > > Since Kentivlle was mentioned first, here is the stats page for there: > > http://climate.weather.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?StationID=27141 > > > > After tomorrow our average depth for the end of January will surely rise some. > > > > Keith Lowe > > Halifax > > > > From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Bev Wigney > Sent: Monday, January 26, 2015 11:44 AM > To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca > Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Snow depth > > > > Regarding snow depth, out of curiosity, this morning I checked quite a number of locations on the Nova Scotia webcams site and there appears to be precious little snow in most areas. I suppose that may change with the predicted storm, but it seemed a little odd to see bare ground in so many places as of this morning. > > bev wigney > Round Hill, NS > > On Jan 25, 2015 4:29 PM, "At" <hamst@xplornet.com <mailto:hamst@xplornet.com> > wrote: > > I don't know answers, but here in East Hants at the beginning of the Rawdon Hills we have almost no snow too! > > Sent from my iPad > > > On Jan 25, 2015, at 7:09 PM, David & Alison Webster <dwebster@glinx.com <mailto:dwebster@glinx.com> > wrote: > > > > Dear All: Jan 25 2015 > > Is snow depth routinely recorded on a time x location grid in NS or elsewhere ? Snow cover in cold weather, to judge from Kentville's experience this year, may soon be a very significant cause of ecosystem disruption here. > > And in that vein, I wonder if most areas now have some snow.
