An excellent place to get an idea of the population of the Monarchs this year is in its fall migration. I was perusing the Roost Reports on Journey North (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/monarch_roosts_fall2014.html) and was pleased to see a reasonable number have been seen. The migration is into Texas now. Take a look at the website - be sure to look at some of the pictures posted. I would love to see that many Monarchs in one place. By the way Alison and I released two more Monarchs yesterday.... our final last. After we announce our last release two weeks ago, I found two large larvae on an old milkweed plant so we brought them inside, feed them better milkweed and allowed them to pupate under our protection. These will be far behind the first wave of the migration but we have had Monarchs emerge in October in other years also. We figure there are several generations raised in our area. Our first eggs were found the first week of July and these last larva were eggs about the first week of September. It takes a month for the egg to become a butterfly so that is three generations.
