Hi Everyone,

During the first half of September each year, hundreds of Swainson's
Thrushes can be heard descending in the dark at a number (and I suspect a
large number) of locations in Nova Scotia. On certain nights, hundreds of
flight calls can be heard in the hour before sunrise when these birds
descend from their migratory flights. Yet the records in eBird show just a
smattering of observations of this species in September in Nova Scotia at
just 7 locations over the last ten years. In Amherst this month, I have
recorded 451 night flight calls of Swainson's Thrush in the morning just
before sunrise but have detected only one during the day walking 1.5 km
transects over the same time period in the same location. Where are they
during the day?

Do you see any Swainson's Thrushes in September? And if so, in what kind of
habitat? Inland or coastal? Swainson's Thrush is supposed to forage heavily
on berries in the fall. Do you see them in habitats with berry crops?

I would be interested in hearing about other people's experiences of
Swainson's Thrush in September.

Thanks,

John
