Thanks for this, Darrell and Andrew, but I'm not certain that this is 
the place I remember.

The "air strip" at the location I am thinking of was just a short walk 
up a gravel path from the road, and was far too short and narrow for 
real planes. I seem to recall that it might have been used by model 
planes. Of course I only saw it at night and so never got a good idea of 
just how long it was.
