Over the past decade we=E2=80=99ve had Black-capped Chickadees nesting =
about every 2nd year in a bird-house in our backyard in West End =
Halifax=E2=80=94but this is the first summer we=E2=80=99ve noticed the =
bird-house hole getting larger, with its circumference increased, the =
edges roughened. The other day I watched (& photographed) a Downy =
Woodpecker pecking away at the hole=E2=80=99s edges, then poking its =
head into the cavity (perhaps for grubs or insects, now that the =
Chickadee nestlings & parents have vacated the house?). Is this common =
woodpecker behavior? Does anyone else have woodpeckers (Downies, or =
other species) enlarging their bird-house holes? Before next spring =
we=E2=80=99ll be getting a new house to replace the old one, because the =
hole is likely now big enough to allow Starlings to take the house over =
from the Chickadees.
