Observations and data collection are planned to start on August 24 and run through early November. Ahead of us is another exciting season certain to be filled with views of hawks soaring, gliding, diving, kettling, streaming and more. Peak flights can produce hundreds or even thousands of hawks per day. Early season observations typically include lots of interaction between resident Merlin, American Kestrel and Sharp-shinned Hawk. These birds often hunt in the old burn surrounding the watch site providing additional viewing opportunities. At least thirteen species of raptor are likely to be recorded. Many of them will be seen daily. Volunteer observers are needed. No experience is nessacary. The official counter will identify all of the birds and record all data. Observers will help spot and track approaching birds of prey. Participants need only to walk in to the site, bring binoculars and have interest in lending a hand. Anyone with interest can help spot the incoming birds. The project takes place on private land, so please contact the project co-ordinator before attempting to visit the site. Participating in this project will provide you with a great opportunity to learn about New Brunswick's birds of prey. The official counter will be onsite whenever data is collected. He will call out hawks as they approach, identifying the birds and sharing tips on in-flight identification. The counter will also provide information on the life histories of these birds including flight strategies during migration and other interesting facts. Daily reports and hawk flight forecasts will be posted here. Counts will be conducted whenever favourable conditions occur. Primary support for this project comes from the New Brunswick Wildlife Trust Fund. Additional support comes from individual donors and our volunteers.
