This morning my sister watched as the Mourning Doves who had nested in the wisteria vines at our family home in Bedford departed. There were two fledglings. This is the third family which has fledged from the same nest this year; a dove first settled into this nest in March, when we were still experiencing wintry weather. I am sorry to say that I didn't keep careful records of dates, but I think the first pair fledged on Easter Sunday (20 April). I assume it was the same parent birds each time. Wendy was alarmed to see a Red Squirrel take a run at the nest just as the second fledgling was testing its wings; she thought that the squirrel was attacking the bird, but it took to flight just in time.
