There was a regular one that could be heard calling at night for several years at Long Lake, HRM, along the road from Spryfield out towards Ketch Harbor, but that hasn't been reported recently. Perhaps that's the one James mentioned. Fulton Lavender also knew of a regular one in what is now Dartmouth crossing in the 1980s, when it was a wooded area. Sightings all over NS have declined dramatically over recent years. Speaking of nocturnal birds, last night I did my annual Owl survey, with Rick Whitman, along the Mines Road - a logging road heading SW from Falmouth. It was a pleasant clear night, with no wind, but we were almost skunked - the only owl we got was a Saw-whet calling in the distance at stop 8 (out of 10), up in the wooded hills well beyond inhabited areas. There was just 1 Woodcock, and the only other noteworthy birds were a Kestrel calling before dark, and a couple of singing Hermit thrushes (Rick put the details on eBird).
