I went to Duncan Reef this morning looking for these early migrants but = hoping for Purple Sandpipers but no luck. A clutter of eight Iceland = Gulls arrived and landed in the sea. The reef itself was festooned with = seals nicely backlit as usual. Off to the west three Harlequin Ducks = floated by, two females and one male. Black Guillemots were scattered = here and there, still in winter plumage. I stopped at Duncan's Cove village to look for the Brown Thrasher which = has been present all winter. Although seen yesterday I could not find it = this morning. At home in Portuguese Cove the usual winter birds are present with no = surprises that I've noticed. A first winter Northern Shrike has been a = regular, and of course the annual over-wintering Sharp-shinned Hawk. A = Northern Mockingbird has visited occasionally but by the time I put the = purple grapes out it's gone again. It's likely the same bird that's been = foraging between Portuguese Cove and Ketch Harbour. Along the coastline from Sandy Cove to Indian Harbour the usual suspects = have over-wintered; Common and Thick-billed Murres, Dovekies, Black = Guillemots, Common Loons, Red-necked Grebes, Great Cormorants, Northern = Pintails, Greater and Lesser Scaups, Common Eiders, Long-tailed Ducks, = all three Scoter species, Common and Barrow's Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, = all three Merganser species, Bald Eagles, Ruffed Grouse, Purple = Sandpipers, Gray Jays, Boreal Chickadees and several small (6-12) = American Robin flocks.
