I’m not making a claim to have seen a particular bird but here’s what I saw for 2 or 3 seconds as I sped past the Hall’s Harbour firehall en route to Kentville at about 2 p.m. this afternoon: a Grouse sized bird was walking, very ,very slowly, on the snow in the ditch on the west side of the 359. It had a lot of black colouring so I virtually shouted “Spruce Grouse!” But when I got home I went to “Grouse” in Sibley, and neither the Ruffed G. or the Spruce G. illustrations matched what I saw. Their markings were much finer than those on the bird I saw. The word that came to my mind when I saw the bird was “splotchy” – dabs of large darks splotches on a lighter background. And the bird that most nearly fits Sibley’s illustration is the Rock Ptarmigan. I didn’t really have time to note anything more than that. As I have said, I make no claim. But that’s what I saw. Comments/speculation are up to you. Mike McCall
