Naturalists presentation on Tues.March 4 will feature a film= on Coyotes so mark this in your calendar.Usual start time of 6:30 p.m. in = the program room of the New Glasgow Library.=20 For the March gathering, the members can view a special screening of the Na= tional Film Board documentary, "Bad Coyote". Length - 51 minutes=20 About the film:=20 It's new, it's fearless, and it's very real. Written and directed by Jason = Young and produced by Paul McNeill for the NFB Atlantic Centre in Halifax, = "Bad Coyote" looks at a hybrid type of coyote, thought to be part wolf, whi= ch has migrated to Eastern Canada. After a deadly mauling in Cape Breton, s= aid to be the first such fatal attack against an adult human, alarm spreads= across Nova Scotia. Trappers, scientists, sheep farmers and the mother of = the 19-year-old victim, Taylor Mitchell, weigh in. Increasing media coverag= e and reports of coyote attacks and sightings prompt the provincial governm= ent to issue a controversial bounty for dead coyotes. To some, the only goo= d coyote is a dead one; but others call for a more measured approach, seeki= ng mutual respect between humans and animals. This short documentary invest= igates a perceived threat in the rural Maritimes following a deadly coyote = attack in the Cape Breton wilderness. Locals react to the attack by conclud= ing that a new super-species is infiltrating their communities: part coyote= and part wolf. But is there any truth to this suspicion, or is the respons= e the result of fear and rumours? Some trailers follow by cutting and past= ing this link. https://www.nfb.ca/film/bad_coyote/trailer/bad-coyote_trailer2 Our April 1 presentation will be titled "The Art of Bird Photography" with = Cliff Sandeson.=20 Cliff Sandeson is a retired teacher from the Truro area who has always enjo= yed nature and nature photography. In this presentation, he will discuss t= he equipment necessary for bird photography, the camera settings that he pr= efers and present 11 tips for better bird photography. He will conclude hi= s presentation with a selection of images that will illustrate the points m= ade in the first section of his program.=20 May 6 Presentation: The Maritimes Butterfly Atlas - just one year left! = with John Klymko=20 Launched in 2010, the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas (MBA) is a five year citize= n science project documenting the occurrence of butterflies in the three Ma= ritime provinces. This is the first atlas of this scale for the Maritimes. = The MBA is modeled after state-level butterfly surveys that are underway or= complete in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts and after the Maritimes Bree= ding Bird Atlas. The MBA's purpose is to produce a snapshot of butterfly populat= ions in the Maritimes today and provide a baseline dataset for the future. = Information gathered will be used to inform conservation decisions, especia= lly with regards to identifying species of conservation concern and their h= abitats. It will be valuable in the decades to come, as scientists examine = effects of climate change and other disturbances on the distribution and ab= undance of native animal species.=20 John Klymko, the Atlas director, will discuss the highlights of= the project as it enters its fifth and final field season, and will provid= e a briefing on how you too can contribute to this conservation effort. Cheryl Hamilton delivered an excellent and revealing presentation on Cambod= ia in our February program highlighting frightening problems with deforesta= tion, and trade in threatened species.
