We birded St. Margaret's Bay Road (SMBR) today and had several good
birds. Our best location was the Wharf in the village of Lower Prospect
(at the end of Terence Bay Rd, off Hwy 333 just after Whites Lakes and
before Shad Bay). Here we had 3 Horned Grebes and a single Red-necked
Grebe, as well as a flock of 50-60 Purple Sandpipers, 6 Black
Guillemots, 6 Common Loons, a Bald Eagle and a male Common Merganser.
All species, except the Purples and the eagle, were within 100m of the
Wharf in calm water; the Purples were seen flying as well as resting on
large rock outcroppings towards the open ocean; the eagle flew overhead.

Once we got back on SMBR, a little farther down the road, near Bayside,
we had a female Hood Merganser diving/foraging among ice floes. We
continued on, had lunch at the "Rhubarb Restaurant" (part of the Seaside
Resort) and a little farther down the road, at a side road clearly
marked as "Ollies Loop" we flushed a Belted Kingfisher from some hydro
lines and spotted 2 more Horned Grebes in the small bay there.
