*This Week's Sky at a Glance*
*January 3 - 11*

Soon after dark, *Sirius*, the Dog Star, rises below Orion.

*Jupiter *is at opposition. All week it's at its biggest and brightest for
2014.

On Tuesday, January 7 the *Moon *will go into its First-quarter Phase
meaning it will rise at noon and set at midnight.

 In this coldest time of the year, the dim *Little Dipper* hangs straight
down from *Polaris *after dusk as if from a nail on the cold north wall of
the sky.

On Saturday, January 4, the *sun *rose at 8:02 a.m. and will set at 4:47
p.m. giving 8 hours 45 minutes of daylight hours.  On Saturday, January 11,
the sun will rise at 8:00 a.m. and set at 4:45 p.m. to give 8 hours 55
minutes of daylight hours (These values are for Moncton, New Brunswick).

*This Week's Planet Roundup *

*Mercury *is hidden deep in the glow of sunset.

*Venus *(magnitude -4 or -3) is dropping to the southwest horizon after
sunset.

*Mars *(magnitude +0.8) rises around 1:00 a.m. It's highest in the south
before the first light of dawn, with Spica to its lower left.

*Jupiter *(magnitude -2.7) is at opposition on January 5th: opposite the
Sun, rising at sunset and highest around midnight, and shining its
brightest and closest of the year. It blazes in the east during evening,
the brightest point in the sky.

*Saturn *(magnitude +0.6) is well up the southeast as dawn begins to
brighten. Look for it far to the lower left of Mars and Spica, and far
below brighter Arcturus.
