While I agree that there is certainly a downward trend in insect availabili=
ty the double wammy of a dry spring summer last year and a cold wet spring =
this year must play havoc with insect cycles.=0A=A0=0AIn an area where inse=
cticides/pesticide use is=A0 very limited the amount of insects is also dow=
n for some species.=0A=A0=0AOur black fly and musquitos were up, lightning =
bugs down despite late cutting of hay, but last year being dry the cutting =
was early as it was dry. This year my fruit trees blossomed but the cold we=
t resulted in almost no pollintion. With limited fruit on the trees there i=
s almost no insects around (less apple blossom maggot flies - from a human =
person this is pleasant as they bite and destroy fruit). Also wild raspberr=
y crops in the open woods are down which also attracts huge numbers of inse=
cts. My swallow nests have gone up 4 to 8 this year (barn & tree) so is thi=
s keeping the day time insect down in the farm yard.=0A=A0=0ABird wise - th=
e number of flycatches were noticably down this june - july. With wet weath=
er and lack of food I assume they went looking for better locations. My usu=
al nesting warblers were all present and in their normal locations.=0A=A0=
=0AMoths seem to be flurishing with the lack of bats this year. Also the Al=
der beetle seems to be in over abundance again this year and tent catipille=
rs are starting to appear in numerous spots, just wish they would leave fru=
it trees alone.=0A=A0=0ARob Woods=0AGeorgefield NS=0A=0ATo free oneself of =

=0AThe Butterfly Atlas is only in its fourth year. Any trends noticed over =
that =0Aperiod of time can probably be explained by looking at the local we=
ather. =0AThis years paucity of (some) species can probably be attributed t=
o last =0Ayears summer drought and heat and this years cold wet spring.=0A=
