Thanks for the link Ron,
This Health Canada site's front page has the following headline: "Evaluatio=
n of Canadian Bee Mortalities that Coincided with Corn Planting in Spring 2=
012". I'd briefly heard about how nitro guanidine insecticides had been lin=
ked to bee mortality in Ontario and Quebec through the dust generated durin=
g the planting of corn seeds but now I have the background material for the=
story.

One must keep in mind that the author quoted is American and thus his state=
ment re "federal regulations" no doubt reflects the US situation which may =
or may not reflect the situation here in Canada. While US and Canadian reg=
ulations often have much in common, one cannot assume they are identical.
In Canada, the Pest Management Regulatory Agency, under Health Canada, is r=
esponsible for regulating pesticide use in Canada. More information can be=

A quote attributed to the study's senior author is telling:
"We don't think of fungicides as having a negative effect on bees, because =
they're not designed to kill insects," vanEngelsdorp stated. Current federa=
l regulations limit the use of insecticides during the time periods when po=
llinating insects are foraging, "but there are no such restrictions on fung=
icides, so you'll often see fungicide applications going on while bees are =
foraging on the crop. This finding suggests that we have to reconsider that=
policy."
