Index of Subjects --_000_BB70A87CFE8B8B4597E5A9D5EDDAB6FB1CD7BD00AS446provgovnsc_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Thanks Lance The topic has always been of interest to me... Back in the 1980s, I decided= to go back to University to work toward an Doctorate. The topic was evalu= ating the differences in forest ecosystem structure between sites that had,= essentially , been treated annually for suppressing spruce pests (budwroms= ) for up to 50 years, with control sites. This was based non the observation that at such sites there appeared to be = a much greater incidence of |snags| than untreated sites I had hypothesize= d that these treated sites were shifting more toward bacterial and fungal d= ecomposers as opposed to ones that were kick-started by mechanical decompos= ers such as Cerambysics, buprestids, and sawflies. Unfortunately the funds I had managed to line up were pulled during the fir= st budget cycle of the Mulroney administrattion, so I did not pursue it. I included it because a comment was made in an earlier email abou= t fungicide effects versus pesticide targets. The author is expressing the = opinion that, at least in the USA, the effects of fungicides on non-target = organisms and processes in the environment are not fully appreciated. Your = comments seem to support his general position concerning the fact that ther= e are unanticipated environmental effects. Coming back to Blake's original observation of a lack of insects, a measure= of insect abundance has existed since the internal combustion engine began= powering wheels. The simple car windshield transect survey. Most people re= ading this have undoubtedly observed a many-fold reduction in the number of= insects that get smeared on their windshield driving a familiar stretch of= road in the summer then there would have been even ten years ago. I had ze= ro tonight on a 70km suppertime drive, half of which is through agricultura= l land. Conditions were clear and about 24C.
