Yes.. that is precisely what it does... In addition= , you can set the frequency so can ture to frequencies that are used prefer= entially by different species. Not as sophisticated as an ANABAT, but good= field tool. Regarding the mosquitos. ... one of the scouts pointed them out.. The bott= om of the band was just at the top of a newly installed sign (2 m height), = and just under 1/3 the height of the placard )... very convenient tool. (T= here was one boyscout who was not much shorter than the sign as well :o) Andrew ________________________________ From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] on beha= lf of David & Alison Webster [dwebster@glinx.com] Sent: August-03-13 10:29 AM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Bats Friday 2 Aug Hi Andrew & All, Aug 3, 2013 Good to her about this much bat activity. In the yard I have observed only one burst of fair activity (16 passes = over the back lawn in five minutes; likely one bat only: 9:20-9:25 pm, July= 28, overcast & calm). Does the Batbox (all news to me) just convert high frequency sounds to = an audible (to humans) range or does it do more ? Does it reduce the freque= ncy of all sounds or just vHF ? With regard to the height and depth of that band of mosquitos, how do y= ou measure this ? With a very tall scout or something more sophisticated ? Bats patrolling pavement early in the evening reminded me of the clouds= of Mayflies that follow a canoe on calm evenings and the similar clouds th= at collect over a stationary wharf. Why fight gravity if you can glide on a= n updraft ? Temp o= f 21C, no wind, partly cloudy Using Batbox IIIs we encountered bats at 4 sites - (1-2 at each site). Th= is is more activity than we had seen 6 weeks earlier at the same site .. us= ually a good site to see them. At the Lawrence House parking lot, there was a band of mosquitos - about 30= cm in depth at a height of about 2 m when we started. they were gone by t= he time we returned (1 1/2 hrs)./ While returning to the farm (14 km west of there), we observed 22 bats in t= he stretch from Selma to Stirling Brook - probably little brown bats, flyin= g along the pavement at about 3-5 m height.. typical early evening patrolin= g style. I was not expecting to see as many, since our previous 2 walks (Maitland an= d Smileys Park) produced very poor results. Andrew No virus found in this message.
