Last week this Broad Headed Bug (Alydus spp) landed on my shoe. The ID should be correct at least to genus level: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/9428490966/ You cannot miss these attractive insects- they have such a deep, shiny, black body with glossy black wings they really stand out. Very active. Quite common in E Dalhousie, Kings Co. What you don't want to do is threaten them. I reached down to sweep this bug onto the ground and it released the most obnoxious odour- incredibly awful! Reading up on them later I see the BH Bug family (Alydidae) even outstinks the Stink Bugs (Pentatomidae) who get all the press in that department. Incidentally brightly coloured Crocs (footwear) are fine insect attractors. So far this bug, dragonflies, damselflies, mayflies and butterflies have landed on them. Even Hummingbirds check them out.
