3 AM=0ASubject: RE: [NatureNS] Birds on the move=0A=0A=0A=0AHi James,=0A=C2=
=A0=0AI=E2=80=99m always interested to hear what experienced observers such=
as you are seeing in their local area at this time of year. There are inva=
riably reports of birds on the move and of birds disappearing from the wood=
s through much of Nova Scotia during the last two weeks of July and I see s=
imilar reports from other parts of eastern Canada. =0A=C2=A0=0ASo what=E2=
=80=99s going on? It could be that most of Nova Scotia=E2=80=99s breeding b=
irds move out of the province in small groups at this time of year. However=
, observations at locations in the south end of the province such as Brier =
Island indicate that the southern migration of most song birds in Nova Scot=
ia doesn=E2=80=99t really begin for another 3-4 weeks and for species such =
as the Blue-headed Vireos you saw, not for another 6-7 weeks. In fact, as y=
ou mention, many nests, especially on the coast and on offshore islands, wo=
n=E2=80=99t even have fledged their young for another few weeks.=0A=C2=A0=
=0ACertainly in some years of early breeding success, some flocks do leave =
Nova Scotia earlier than expected. However, I suspect that what=E2=80=99s u=
sually happening is that many adults and fledged young are gathering into s=
mall, pre-migration, feeding flocks. These mostly remain in thicker cover a=
t this time of year and stay there building up their fat reserves for sever=
al weeks. Combine this with the fact that the males stop singing from expos=
ed positions and the result is that the flock is simply not very conspicuou=
s. When birds are seen in these groups at this time of year after an absenc=
e of a week or three they are often thought to be migrating. =0A=C2=A0=0AHo=
wever, this is speculation on my part. I=E2=80=99ll be very interested to s=
ee if you continue to notice similar groups in your area over the coming we=
eks which would lend some support to the idea.=0A=C2=A0=0AAll the best,=0A=

e=0A=C2=A0=0A=0AAs a casual observation from Lunenburg County, I've noticed=
that over the past two weeks birds have gone from territory to moving slig=
htly to gone altogether at most locations.=C2=A0 So birds=C2=A0have started=
moving in migration.=C2=A0 Especially the woods warblers, veeries and blue=
-headed vireos.=C2=A0 This was especially obvious=C2=A0from Walden, through=
to Woodstock, and into Mahone Bay and at the Fauxburg Trail.=C2=A0 Hermit =
thrushes, Eastern Wood=C2=A0Pewees and Red-eyed vireos still seem to be str=
ongly on territory and there are still a few warblers who likely are late n=
esters on territory yet.=C2=A0 One common yellowthroat especially.=C2=A0 A =
male who came out and flew around me and then=C2=A0did the broken wing thin=
