I organised a boat outing for the Halifax Outdoor Adventurers to Pearl
Island on 6 July. This was a photo tour, and there were 18 of us on
board. We went out of the town of Mahone Bay, traveled through the bay of
the same name, and reached Pearl Island in 90 minutes. We spent an hour
around the island, then returned to port. It was a lovely day of weather.
*Pearl Island Observations (numbers very approximate):*
Common Eider
= 80 = lots of apparent young birds, all now capable of flight
Double-crested Cormorant
= 25 = No young birds in evidence
Great Cormorant
= 1 = one sub-adult, sitting on the lighthouse. Spotted by Ian McLaren.
Semipalmated Sandpiper
= 2 = only shorebirds noted
Black-legged Kittiwake
= 40 = only one chick noted
Herring Gull
= 100 = no chicks in evidence
Great Black-backed Gull
= 30 = no chicks in evidence
Arctic Tern
= 2 = these were the ONLY terns noted all day, and they were not evidently
nesting
Razorbill
= 75 = no sign of any food transport by the adults.
Black Guillemot
= 40 = adults were NOT loafing, unlike with the Razorbills and Puffins, and
so may have been having better luck with finding food for their young.
Atlantic Puffin
= 60 = no sign of any food transport by the adults.
I suspect this will be a bad year for breeding on this island. No signs of
herring anywhere.
We saw NO terns on any island in Mahone Bay, and only two Herring Gull
chicks.
We saw NO pelagic species of any kind, other than the nesting kittiwakes.
I wonder what is the situation on the Bird Islands? Or the islands off the
south coast?
