Yes I think you may be right about the projections being a fungus of some so=
rt. The hole it is coming out might be where an insect has bored in and has e=
ither allowed the spores to enter or passed them along. Or possibly the fung=
us itself penetrated the seed pod from the inside since it comes out the top=
 too.=20

The weevil pictured could be responsible for the hole. It's photo is poor qu=
ality (3mm is hard to capture with an iPhone camera) but it does have a dist=
inct snout hence the ID.=20
