Just a guess but it might be a fungal structure of some kind along the =
lines of Exobasidium. The insect looks like an early instar of some =
Hemipteran.

Subject: [NatureNS] weevil snorkels? on Rhodora

I took this fuzzy picture of these Rhodora seed pods b/c I was =
wondering what the projections sticking out of the ends of the unripe =
seeds were:

When I took a close-up of the green pods I noticed one coming out of =
the side as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/9216174226/

Then this small Weevil dropped out of the plant:=20
  http://www.flickr.com/photos/92981528@N08/9213397561/

My question: Would these tubes have something to do with the weevil =
larvae that are probably inside, feeding on the unripe pods? Some large =
aquatic fly grubs (maggots) have long breathing tubes.

  Weevil id?

  Nancy
