While walking on a trail close to home = (Coldbrook)=2C I heard a cock calling=2C then shortly flushed a hen. After = a few more steps flushed 5 young (3/4 grown).=20 =20 Since pheasants ( and deer) are relatively safe on the Valley floor (too ma= ny houses to allow hunting)=2C the population seems to be static. I wonder = which predator is significant...skunks=2C raccoons? =20 Since I photograph insects as a hobby=2C I can say insects have been extrem= ely scarce so far. Each year one can see a marked decrease in their populat= ions. No wonder their avian predators are having such a hard time. Angus=20 From: dcrossland@eastlink.ca To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] Bad weather for breeding birds-ground nesters maybe the= most? Date: Tue=2C 2 Jul 2013 19:28:22 -0300 I would agree with this having been a bad season for a lot of nesters=2C pa= rticularly those who nest on the ground. Many of the loon nests have floo= ded out=2C some with eggs that were near hatching=2C but alas the water kee= ps rising. In the Valley=2C pheasants did not appear to have a very succes= sful this year. I haven=92t startled any young broods as I walk along the = places where I=92ve often seen them in the past. Ovenbird=2C Veery=2C and = Hermit thrush-=2C not quite as vocal on the annual point counts=2C but mayb= e that=92s just the overcast weather. =20 =20 Aerial insectivores seem to be affected=2C too. I hear fewer least flycatc= hers on the point counts. Our tree swallows settled down to nest in three = separate houses=2C but none were successful. Almost no insects were flying= about during those nasty cold spells earlier this spring. =20 Tough year=2C I think. (I=92ve lost track=2C but I think it has been rain= ing for 7 months and 3 days... just kidding.) =20 Donna =20 From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] = On Behalf Of Blake Maybank Sent: July-02-13 3:57 PM To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Subject: [NatureNS] Bad weather for breeding birds=2C and disappearing humm= ingbirds =20 Hi All=3B This does not appear to be a great summer for breeding success.
