Usually by this time of the year, we have seen the first Monarch butterflies in our milkweed patch. I did a survey of our field and patches in nearby fields - no Monarchs. The common Milkweed is tall and getting ready to flower.

I was checking Monarch watch (monarchwatch.org) and it recorded the lowest area ever for the size of area used by Monarch for overwintering in Mexico. Many areas of the U.S. have not seen any Monarchs yet. It does not look good for this year.

I note that Journeynorth.org shows one Monarch has been reported in Nova Scotia on the 20th June in Cape Breton.

I have sighted two Viceroy Butterflies it the last week. One near Brooklyn, Hants County and one in Brooklyn Corner, Kings County. They do look superficial like Monarches.
