In years gone by the company gave the birds some = protection, and the N.S. Bird Society monitored the site. It looks like = in the past trenches were dug through the sawdust pile in order to = provide predator-free vertical =E2=80=9Cbanks=E2=80=9D for the nesting = swallows.=20 But this trenching seems to have stopped years ago, the vertical = surfaces gradually disappeared, and so have the nesting swallows.
