This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000F_01CE44CB.2C8B7570 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I am assuming that this thread is about Pink Lady's-Slippers Cypripedium = acaule. Although this species is the most abundant of our FOUR different = Lady's-Slippers, it is almost a complete failure when it comes to = setting seed capsules. Numbers tossed around in the past have between 4 = to 8 percent. Also up until lately, it was almost impossible to = transplant or sow from seed. The pollinators are the first of the years = Bumblebees Bombus sp. and they are too big to get through the exit hole = in the back of the bulb like lip of the floral part. Many die inside = while others chew their way out and learn very fast to stay away from = those bright red flowers. Of the other three species: Yellow Lady's- Slippers Cypripedium = pubescens and Showy Lady's-Slippers Cypripedium reginae are about equal = when it comes to setting seed capsules possibly 20 to 30 percent. The champion of the 4 species for setting seed capsules is the little = Ram's Head Lady's-Slipper Cypripedium arietinum. This plant comes close = to 90 percent or more in developing it's seed capsules. Look in Gypsum country For Ram's Head on or about May 25 and later. = Also in Gypsum, the Yellow on or about June 10. Look for Showys in wet, = basic soil on or about July 1. The Pink Lady's Slipper is only found in = acidic soil(most of NS) on or about June 10. Also for those who would try picking either Yellows or Showys, these two = have a nasty little secret. You will notice that these two are kind of = hairy on the stems and some people will get an allergenic reaction from = them. Not as bad as Poison ivy but a force to be reckoned with. So, for ALL four species, Enjoy, Photograph and Admire BUT Please Do Not = Pick !!
