Crested Caracara in New Brunswick Some of you including myself were curious about the other Crested Caracara in New Brunswick so I decided to contact Joanne Savage. She in turn checked with Jim Wilson who was familiar with the bird so here it is... In mid-October 2002, Frank Branch IDd the first-year Crested Caracara after being alerted to a strange species on the Acadian Peninsula near Tracadie-Sheila by another person. Tracadie-Sheila is about 75 km NE of Miramichi, New Brunswick. It was last sighted by Jim and Jean Wilson on Oct 29th, 40 km from the original spot. In all sightings, it was in farmer's fields eating worms. It seems not many birders went to see it as there was much doubt as to the bird actually being a Caracara which is not a migratory species. There were reports of the species being noted in other sites that year [Northern states and some other provinces]. The bird was first under question as to being a released bird related to not normally being a migratory bird. It was found to be a first year bird. There were reports of the species being noted in other sites that year [Northern states and some other provinces. It took 2 years for the bird record committee to study and accept the species. The bird record committee eventually did accept the sighting as others had shown up in other provinces that year. Thanks to Joanne Savage and Jim Wilson, both from New Brunswick!
