Finally heard the BC Chickadees singing in our area, and the lovely Mourning Dove song was evident! Also, a couple of days ago, I noted a Dark-eyed Junco apparently carrying nesting material - a beakful of what looked like pine needles. Seemed to me a tad early for nest building, especially considering that, believe it or not, we still have a foot of snow on our front lawn! A 7-km hike on a few of the trails at Uniacke Estates yesterday was like a mid-winter walk except for the relatively mild temperature. Snow still covered most of the Red Spruce, Barrens and Post Trails. Birds were virtually absent so I spent my time taking close-up looks at lichens!!
