The path of a total solar eclipse is narrow and sweeps =20 rapidly across Earth=92s surface. Almost three-quarters of Earth is =20 covered with ocean. Opportunity is therefore limited, so it is a rare =20= privilege to stand in the shadow of the moon. On a scale of one to =20 ten, most amateur astronomers will rate the majestic spectacle of a =20 total solar eclipse at one thousand! The 2012 November eclipse made =20 its only landfall across the tropical northeast of Australia, near the =20= Great Barrier Reef. The appeal was impossible to resist, in spite of =20 less than stellar weather prospects at the beginning of the local =20 monsoon season. This is an account of the eclipse chase, and all of =20 its collateral adventures. Mary Lou Whitehorne joined the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in =20= 1986 and is a life member of the Society. During that time she served =20= many years on the Halifax Centre executive, including three terms as =20 President. She has been active in every aspect of Halifax Centre life. =20= Nationally, she has served on numerous committees, included six years =20= on the national executive, with the last two years in the position of =20= president. She has written for, contributed to, edited, authored or =20 been involved in the production of all of the Society=92s publications. =20= She is the recipient of the Chant Medal, Simon Newcomb Award, the =20 Messier and Finest NGC Certificates, as well as the Las Cumbres =20 Amateur Outreach Award. Minor planet 144907 Whitehorne carries her =20 name in recognition of her contribution to educational outreach in =20 Canada. Mary Lou has been involved in science education for 25 years, =20= working with teachers and students at all grade levels in classrooms, =20= workshops and summer institutes, at professional development =20 conferences, and in fixed and portable planetaria. She spent a few =20 years doing space science education with the Canadian Space Agency and =20= Canada=92s astronauts. She is the author of Skyways Astronomy Handbook =20= for Teachers and Explorons l=92astronomie =96 Guide p=E9degogique. In = recent =20 years she worked on innovative new educational products with =20 Simulation Curriculum Corporation, and is lead author of Starry Night =20= Middle School, Starry Night High School, and Starry Night Elementary. =20= Her most recent role has been as astronomy consultant to the National =20= Film Board for its upcoming Space School project. Mary Lou is a =20 relatively inexperienced eclipse chaser, having traveled =20 internationally only twice to stand in the shadow of the moon. =3D=20 =3D=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Patrick Kelly Director of Computer Facilities =3D=20 =3D=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Faculty of Architecture and Planning Dalhousie University =3D=20 =3D=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D MAIL COURIER PO Box 15000 5410 Spring Garden Road Halifax, Nova Scotia B3H 4R2 Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada Canada =3D=20 =3D=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Phone:(902) 494-3294 FAX:(902) 423-6672 E-mail:patrick.kelly@dal.ca =3D=20 =3D=20 =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D --Apple-Mail-207-433074477 Content-Type: text/html; charset=WINDOWS-1252 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html><body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div>Room BAC241, Beveridge = Arts Centre, Acadia, 7:30 PM</div><div><br></div><div><b>Monday, March = 18, 2013 =96 The Big Eclipse Gamble by Mary Lou Whitehorne</b>.
