Hi AllThis morning was so nice I went with my wife to townand she dropped m=
e of 6 - 7 kms so I could walk home.The walking was good - the snow well pa=
cked and not many slippy patches. As I was coming along, I went up on a Drum=
lin along the trail. It had a nice groveof white pine - not large perhaps 4=
0 cm diameter at breast height, I thought to checkfor early nests. In the g=
rove was an old stone foundation or well casing. It was about2 m in diamete=
r and had a walk way into it. The stone rose up about 1 m above the local=
=A0ground, As there was snow on the ground the area wasn't visible. The roc=
k work waswell done - no mortar - just the stones properly placed. Someone =
knew what they were doing.=A0Not impossible it was Acadian. On the way I pas=
sed through a spot where Ruffed Grouse seem to like. Today therewas 2 that =
I saw plus a few that I heard flying off - also tracks in the snow. Nobody =
drumming yet although I was hoping but soon.Further on the trail has a
ditch along a south facing cut in a drumlin. There is a little brook in th=
e ditch and it was trickling today. About 20 small birds had gathered and s=
eemed to be drink out of the ditch or maybe getting insects, About half wer=
e Goldfinches and the rest was Juncos and Chickadees with a few sparrows. A=
nice flock. At a bridge which crosses over a tidal inlet the tide was half =
down and going out. About 16 mallards were sitting among the rocks, rock we=
eds and dead grass. Well camoflaged - need look closely to see them. There =
was also a Black Duck nearby and 3 Hooded Mergansers 2 males and a female. =
The males well very sharp with the dark water and the sun shining on there =
feathers.=A0A =A0great walk - enjoy the winterPaul
