In a 2012 environmental assessment report of the impa= ct of the realignment of the Trans-Canada Highway in PEI the following can = be found: =C2=A0=E2=80=9CRoad salts that contain inorganic chloride salts a= re considered =E2=80=9Ctoxic=E2=80=9D as defined in Section 64 of the CEPA= =E2=80=A6 Environment Canada determined that the development and refinement= of Salt Management Plans is the best mitigation against potential environm= ental effects from road salt use.=E2=80=9D =C2=A0Also, Environment Canada h= as issued a number of bulletins regarding road salt as well. This from an A= ugust 2000 bulletin: =C2=A0=E2=80=9CBehavioural and toxicological impacts h= ave been associated with exposure of mammalian and avian wildlife to road s= alts. Road salt increases the vulnerability of birds to car strike and may = poison some birds directly. To relieve thirst, birds may ingest snow which could have negative energetic consequences; consumption = of meltwater containing high concentrations of salt may increase salt inges= tion rather than alleviating salt toxicosis. Road salt may also affect wild= life through its impact on habitat, with reduction in plant cover or commun= ity shifts that could affect wildlife dependent on these plants for food or= shelter.=E2=80=9D =C2=A0Of course whether decision makers heed these warni= ngs is another question entirely. =C2=A0All the best, =C2=A0Lance =C2=A0Lan= ce LavioletteGlen Robertson, Ontario =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 ---1879531-424091193-1359668656=:51939 Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <table cellspacing=3D"0" cellpadding=3D"0" border=3D"0" ><tr><td valign=3D"= top" style=3D"font: inherit;">Hi Lance<div>The time frame what I referred t= o was the 1950/60s.</div><div>I talked to them then and was told I didn't k= now what I was</div><div>talking about!
