--00151758a6e6bbf64404d3dfc055 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 hi folks, Some follow up on some of the discussion around Phil Taylor's talk last night at the *Blomidon Naturalists Society* meeting. *The Science of Bird Migration -- uncovering new secrets of migration using radar and telemetry. *Dr. Phil Taylor is the Bird Studies Canada chair at the Acadia University Biology Department. (http://www.blomidonnaturalists.ca/event/2013/01/21/day) Two questions at the meeting were: 1. *How can we identify migrants heard or seen flying overhead at night?* 2. *How can we participate in bird migration monitoring?* - In previous posts to the naturens list, *John Kearney*, Antigonish, provided some useful links on these topics. Here is an excerpt from his post in July, 2011: "*Anyone wishing to know more about the night flight calls of** birds or are interested in building their own inexpensive microphone should visit: http://www.oldbird.org/ * *A useful and attractive poster on the night flight calls of warblers can be found at: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/Page.aspx?pid=2229* *Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.*" Some *summaries of data from his personal monitoring station* can be seen on his website (http://www.johnfkearney.com/Nocturnal_Migration.html) and you can *search his past naturens posts for circa-weekly reports from his station *this past season. - An additional note is that *ipod/smartphone apps* (e.g., the free app "SpectrumView") can take an audio signal received by the built in microphone in your device and *display it, in real-time, as a spectrogram *. The spectrogram can be saved as an image for later reference, or, you can use the app to record the audio which could then potentially be analysed using sound analysis software. Whether or not identification to species (or species candidates) could be achieved this way would depend on several factors - I have not tried this myself. Maybe someone else on the list has... (As a side note, by day, these apps can be used to assist in identification of species by their songs as well, by displaying information on frequency, amplitude, duration, cadence, song pattern, etc ...hmmm...and maybe help me detect Creepers down the road when the damage to my ears from drumming has kicked in). cheers, James. -- James Churchill Kentville, Nova Scotia Email: jameslchurchill@gmail.com Phone (h): (902) 681-2374 Skype: jameslchurchill --00151758a6e6bbf64404d3dfc055 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <div dir=3D"ltr">hi folks,=A0<div><br><div>Some follow up on some of the di= scussion around Phil Taylor's talk last night at the <b>Blomidon Natura= lists Society</b> meeting.=A0<br clear=3D"all"><div><br></div><div><font co= lor=3D"#000000"><em style=3D"margin:0px;padding:0px;font-family:'Times = New Roman';vertical-align:baseline;text-align:justify"><b><font size=3D= "4">The Science of Bird Migration</font></b><span style=3D"font-size:12px">= -- uncovering new secrets of migration using radar and telemetry.=A0</span= ></em><span style=3D"font-family:'Times New Roman';font-size:12px;t= ext-align:justify">Dr. Phil Taylor is the Bird Studies Canada chair at the = Acadia University Biology Department.=A0</span><br> </font></div><div><span style=3D"text-align:justify"><font face=3D"Times Ne= w Roman" color=3D"#000000"><span style=3D"font-size:12px">(<a href=3D"http:= //www.blomidonnaturalists.ca/event/2013/01/21/day">http://www.blomidonnatur= alists.ca/event/2013/01/21/day</a>)</span></font><br> </span></div><div><br></div><div style>Two questions at the meeting were:</= div><div><br></div><div style>1. <b>How can we identify migrants heard or s= een flying overhead at night?</b></div><div style>2. <b>How can we particip= ate in bird migration monitoring?</b><br> </div><div><br></div><div style><ul style><li style>In previous posts to th= e naturens list, <b>John Kearney</b>, Antigonish, provided some useful link= s on these topics.
