------=_NextPart_000_000D_01CDEC01.4C1C --Apple-Mail-4--919417375 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hi all, Coincidentally, I was thinking about bird guides just before this thread = appeared. I'd returned from catching a glance of a duck in flight, and = needed a quick reminder of which one it was. I'm firmly in the Sibley camp, and have the others on hand for further = reference (I reckon the National Wildlife Federation is one of the = better photo guides). But the one I turned to, for just the basic, = at-a-glance patterns, was a first edition of Peterson's (1934), with the = flying ducks all laid out on the same plates, without a lot of clutter = or details that won't show up at 500 metres anyway. Not that I'm suggesting the old Peterson is the one to have -- but it'd = be cool to see someone come out with a comprehensive guide that stuck to = the same simple principles that even the Peterson series itself drifted = away from. Cheers, Andy On Jan 6, 2013, at 11:30 AM, John Kearney wrote: > For anyone considering the purchase of a bird guide for smartphones, = the three major guides (Sibley, Peterson, iBird) are now in = post-Christmas sales with savings of 33-66%. > =20 > From: naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca = [mailto:naturens-owner@chebucto.ns.ca] On Behalf Of Nancy Dowd > Sent: January 6, 2013 07:24 > To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca > Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Birding Guides > =20 > I would say the Peterson's book is the best for a beginner.
