We have a Blue Jay by the house - it ran into the house last year and hurt its head. I feed it peanuts to help it along and now it sits on the back steps looking for peanuts. It takes the peanuts sticks them in the lawn, covers them up with grass and leaves. They will never grow but it hopes. Thinks we are in Georgia! They help trees that grow nuts, oaks and so on - plants the nuts everywhere and lots grow. Horse Chestnuts grow in my garden. Every year there is 8 - 10 shoot up. The blue jay brings the seed 400 - 500 meters and stick them in. If you ever want any chestnut seedlings let me know. A very useful bird in these days of forestry regeneration. Enjoy the fall Paul ________________________________ From: "desolatechair@gmail.com" <desolatechair@gmail.com> To: naturens@chebucto.ns.ca Sent: Saturday, November 3, 2012 10:38:27 AM Subject: [NatureNS] Hoarding Blue Jay Rascals Since putting my feeders back up the thieving Blue Jays have cleaned me out of a 16kg bag in two weeks. Somewhere in my neighbourhood there is a hollow tree stuffed with black oil sunflower seeds. Of passing interest are semi regular Evening Grosbeaks, which have been rare in these parts last few years. A regular pair of Northern Cardinals with occasional juvenile; White Throated Sparrows; Song Sparrows; Black Capped Chickadees; a White Breasted Nuthatch; a pair of Northern Flickers; a regular male Ring Necked Pheasant and irregular female; Dark Eyed Juncos. Purple Finches. No American Goldfinches so far which is unusual. Also an abundance of Mourning Doves, The proliferation of this species in these parts amazes me.
