Yesterday I encountered a Nelson's Sparrow on the dyke that didn't flush. I have a series of three photos that show the subtle but beautiful colours of this species. I like every part of this bird but I want to comment that the olive colour on the back of the head (the nape) is genuine and showed up on 27 shots. I don't see that colour illustrated in guides I own. The species ID is not in question and Ian McLaren has confirmed the local subspecies "subvirgatus". The bill is also on the large size. Ian pointed out in his new book that our Nelson's Sparrows "are more variable than depicted in field guides." http://tinyurl.com/d772c57 Rick Whitman
