There has been alot of chatter lately about the Painted Lady explosion in NS and even in and about metro . For my 2 cents worth I can attest that in the past weeks it has been ridiculous the numbers of leps in our backyard. What prompted me to post my observation as of late this afternoon was the diversity on the whit butterfly bush. There in total as I stood in awe were at one time 4 Monarchs , 2 red Admirals, 2 American Lady and approx 30(+/-) because they were flitting around so much ( about 2 leps per blossom) . Pardon the pun but it was literally as "busy as a beehive ". The odes I observed today in Eastern Passagewere quite interesting too : At one particular pond where there were both 12 spotted Skimmer and Common White tail both jousting with each for territorial air space . I was hard pressed to get a better air show than if I watched the Snowbirds or Blue Angels. At one point a larger Common Green Darner would enter theyre respective air space and they woud put the boots to him and then he would book it around the pond . But the hilite at the pond was seeing my first Wandering Glider of the summer. I have seen Spot-winged Gliders thru out the summer in various parts of the province interestingly without seeing any Wandering. The other note worthy fact about this ode was that it was a recently emerged immature ( and if I did not know better would say it had emerged here ) considering they are a well known species for migrating northward and showing up here usually in late summer/fall. Also saw a 12 spotted Skimmer fly off its perch and take a loping Common Ringlet butterfly on the wing in one pass . It was a amazing ! Other Odes : Canada Darner Green-striped Darner Variable darner White faced Meadowhawk Cherry /Ruby faced meadowhawk Other Leps: Orange Sulphur Clouded Sulphur Cabbage White Very fresh Viceroy Common Wood Nymph ( old ) Great day in Marshes & Backyard DB ****************** Derek W.
