A close friend in Vermont who used to breed and show sheep had two guard
dogs. Don't know the breed but they apparently originated in Macedonia. They
were very large white dogs that were fine with human visitors but killed
everything else that wasn't a sheep, including lots of deer.
He finally replaced them with specially bred guard donkeys that proved
very effective and easier to look after.

Hi Richard
I didn't see the article so cann't comment on it but
eagles preying on lambs are a problem world over.
No doubt goes back before sheep were domesticated.
Some breeds are more at risk than other. Do you know the Clum Forest?
Or is it Clun?
Sheep from there are very aggressive and will put the run to eagles.
The breed has other shortcoming though - LOL
The Guard dogs - the big white fellows from Europe are very effective
on eagles as well as coyotes and just about anything else that will
venture near the flock.
I think they developed in a few different countries so there is a few
different breeds
but are very alike.Sheep farmers tell me they are a great investment.
However if you see a strange bird in a field of sheep and there is a big
white dog there
- don't go in the field for a closer look! You might get to find out about
their dental works!
Very protective but real pets for those they know.
Enjoy the summer
Paul

There was a CBC news item yesterday about a farmer in Maccan complaining
that Eagles were attacking and eating his lambs. There are "several Eagles'
nests" there. I have never heard of Bald Eagles behaving this way, but it
reminds me of similar stories years ago regarding Golden Eagles in the
English Lake District, where I used to go hiking in my youth. I don't know if
that was ever proven. I thought Bald eagles just eat dead chickens and live
fish. Any comments?

Richard
