Hi Dave=0AGood points you bring out.=0AThe whole question has brought out p=
eople with lots of opinions=0Abut with very little knowledge. But that neve=
r stops the Media types - LOL!=0AThe wild salmon population in the Gulf of =
St Lawrence rivers was at an all time=0Arecord as long as records were kept=
. That was last year. Newfoundland rivers the=0Asame with some exceptions a=
s were European Rivers.=0AA couple of rivers in Maine had large runs but th=
e Bay of Fundy and Atlantic Coast=0Arivers were low. All =A0the while the N=
atives and DOF play their chess game so its=0Ahard to know if the populatio=
n is going up, down or sideways.=0ANova =A0Scotia Rivers have big problems =

dy & All,=A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 June 11, 2012=0A=A0  The q=
uestion that nags is: Would salmon have declined to the same extent (or nea=
rly the same) if there had been no aquaculture ?=0A=0A=A0 Public pressure =
(perhaps misinformed pressure) may force the industry to undergo a modern v=
ersion of ordeal by water; the original being you are innocent if you sink =
and drown but if you rise alive to the surface then you are guilty and burn=
ed at the stake. So this is not just an academic question.=0A=0A=A0 Drawin=
g on memory, e.g. poor salmon runs in some NB rivers as early as 1950 led t=
o a program to control Mergansers way before farmed salmon (I think). Also =
salmon runs along the South and Eastern shore have been in decline for 5 de=
cades or more. how can aquaculture have caused this ? Have acid rain and ov=
erfishing in the ocean had no effects after all ?=0A=0A=A0 Assuming that s=
ea lice and escaped farmed salmon adversely affect wild stock should not th=
e emphasis be on solving these problems ?=0A=0AYt, Dave Webster, Kentville=

 =A0 There has been numerous articles and letters recently about open-pen=
=0A> Salmon farms. One in particular caught my eye (June 9, CH, Jim Gourlay=
)=0A> "...proven devastation of wild Atlantic Salmon stocks wherever open-p=
en=0A> salmon aquaculture has been sited..."=0A> =0A>=A0 =A0 As I recall, s=
almon stocks were in very bad shape before culture of=0A> salmon was initia=
ted; culture of salmon being a way to offset the shortage=0A> of wild salmo=
n and take some pressure off of these wild stocks that were=0A> probably be=
ing overfished off Greenland.=0A> =0A>=A0 =A0 Are there really examples of =
abundant salmon stocks in areas where there=0A> has been no open-pen salmon=
 farming ?=0A> =0A>=A0 =A0 Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville=0A> =0A> =0A> =0A> =
