Index of Subjects Sorry I didn't get on this earlier. The culprit is actually a new species of flea beetle to the province. It first came to my attention a couple of years ago but by the time any samples were sent in the bulk of the beetles were already gone and although the damage appeared to be typical willow flea weevil...but only on beech instead. Chris Majka took a look for me and also id'd it as a flea beetle, most likely willow flea beetle but was not sure because something just didn't seem right. Well it appears Chris was correct....flea beetle , yes.....willow, no. This springs CFIA informed it me it has been identified as Orchestes fagi, the beech flea weevil a native of Europe. They are currently investigating and looking for sites of the damage to determine the range of this species. The below link gives an excellent description or the beast. https://www3.gov.ns.ca/gw/webacc/659933fdb8fdddd29c2f65b6f39c16d270b8a3/GWAP/AREF/2?action=Attachment.View&error=fileview&Item.Attachment.filename=Orchestes+fagi_JJ_LD.pdf&Item.Attachment.id=2&User.context=659933fdb8fdddd29c2f65b6f39c16d270b8a3&Item.drn=76187z4z0&Item.Child.id=&Item.Attachment.allowViewNative=1 hope this clears things up and if I hear anything else I will be sure to pass it along Jeffrey Ogden Integrated Pest Management Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources P.O.Box 130 Shubenacadie, N.S.
