Hi all
Yesterday while birding on Big I. Charlie Kendell, Rick Ferguson and I =
noted Common Grackles ensnared in lobster traps sitting on the wharf. =
Several were repeatedly trying to get out without success and at least =
one was in rigor mortis with its head stuck through the meshing. =20
Years ago I can remember freeing a Ruffed Grouse trapped in lobster trap =
at Caribou PP, but I had not seen anything like this since.=20
In this case, the traps were piled such that they were hard to access =
without a boat and were all tied together with a rope so that individual =
traps could not be moved around. We were thus unable to do anything =
about the situation. This morning I called the local DNR office in =
MacLellans Brook to see if they might be able to do something and the =
problem has been passed to the Wildlife officer.=20
I am wondering how widespread this might be? Common Grackles are =
certainly not in any danger of having their population depleted, but it =
is a shame to see a bird suffer while struggling to free itself. =20
