When people describe a bird to me and use the colour "red", for example, I always dig deeper. Some folks (e.g. many guys) have an aversion to saying "pink", so they'll say red. Birders may know the difference between stripes and bars, but not everyone does. So a really stripy bird could in fact be an adult sharpie, which is barred (though the young are striped), leading you to dismiss it as a possibility..
