Hi folks,
I've been keeping an eye on the evening sky. This evening was especially =
nice. I'm sure you have been noticing the sights too. There is a neat =
show taking place in the western sky just now.

VENUS and JUPITER , the two VERY BRIGHT planets, are getting closer in =
the sky each night, and will soon be side by side ( March 12,13, 14) =
making a very attractive sight in the early evening sky (6:30 to 7 p.m. =
is a good time to look (in the twilight, when the darkening sky still =
has some blue in it). Venus is the brightest of the pair.

Even sooner: evenings of Feb 25, 26 and 27 will also be particularly =
nice with the crescent moon passing near the two planets. March 9 to =
March 16 also will be nice and ESPECIALLY MARCH 13 and 14 when the two =
planets will be at their CLOSEST (a planetary conjunction). A bright =
gathering like that does not take place all that often. So have a good =
look whenever you can, especially in a location away from distracting =
yard and street lights.

The two planets look close in the sky but in actual space they are quite =
far apart. Light from Venus (appears brightest) takes only about 6 or 7 =
minutes to reach Earth whereas light from Jupiter(physically the =
largest) takes about 40 minutes to get here (compared to light =
reflected from the Moon, which takes only 1.25 sec) .

It is indeed quite a sight in a nice clear, darkening, western sky, =
early evening. More about the event on my website=20
http://web.mac.com/sherm39/Site_2/Home_Site.html=20
and here is a you tube video on it too.=20
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dx8br4JiFEik

Sirius, the Dog Star (nine light-years away), is quite bright, in the =
south. It twinkles and refracts into different colours. The bright =
(slightly red-orange "star" up in the southeast by mid-evening is MARS, =
getting closer and brighter (now about 6 light-minutes distant). By =
early March it will be high in the=20

south by midnight, with the Full Moon positioned near Mars, March 6,7 =
and 8.

Space Stn (ISS) is currently making visible passes in the evening sky. =
Get a schedule for a location near you or paste this in the URL =
window: http://web.mac.com/sherm39/Site/HeavensAboveLink.html

Wishing you clear, evening skies, Sherm=
