Since birds also need water in the winter, I have been leaving the pump
going in my small (4 ft x 6 ft) pond in the backyard. It keeps an area of
water open except after a spell of really cold weather when I have to break
up some of the ice that forms.

All of the birds that come to my feeders also fly down to the pond to get
drinks of water. These include the Northern Mockingbird as well as: Rock
Pigeons, Mourning Doves, Black-capped Chickadees, Blue Jays, European
Starlings, House Sparrows and American Goldfinches. The sound of the
bubbling water probably acts as an attractant.
