BRIER ISLAND CHRISTMAS COUNT, 16 DECEMBER 2011

Weather overcast with showers in AM; partly clear in PM. 7 C. Wind SW 35-40 kph in AM; W
25-45 in PM.

0730-1700 AST

Participants: David Currie, Ross Fisher, Frank Garron, George Garron, Louise Garron,
Michael Kieley, Dawn Mackenzie, Crystal McDormand, Ian McLaren, Anne Mills, Eric Mills
(compiler).

51 species, 11, 140 individuals

Black Duck - 97; Mallard - 2; Green-winged Teal - 3; Common Eider - 216; Surf Scoter - 3;
White-winged Scoter - 8; Black Scoter - 9; Long-tailed Duck - 226; Bufflehead - 8; Common
Goldeneye - 3; Red-breasted Merganser - 21; Ring-necked Pheasant - 10; Common Loon -
20; Red-necked Grebe - 6; Northern Gannet - 98; Double-crested Cormorant - 1; Great
Cormorant - 109; Great Blue Heron - 2; Turkey Vulture - 1; Red-tailed Hawk - 1; Wilson's
Snipe - 1; Black-legged Kittiwake - 4681; Ring-billed Gull - 6; Herring Gull - 846; Iceland Gull
- 153; Great Black-backed Gull - 319; Pomarine Jaeger - 1; Razorbill - 3556; Black
Guillemot - 39; Atlantic Puffin - 10; Alcid sp. - 353; Rock Pigeon - 18; Mourning Dove - 46;
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1; Blue Jay - 20; Am. Crow - 62; Raven - 14; Black-capped
Chickadee - 55; Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1; Golden-crowned Kinglet - 9; Eu. Starling - 55;
American Pipit - 7; Snow Bunting - 10; Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler - 1; Savannah
(Ipswich) Sparrow - 1; Song Sparrow - 10; White-throated Sparrow - 1; N. Cardinal - 1; Red-
winged Blackbird - 3; Common Grackle - 10; Brown-headed Cowbird - 4; Am. Goldfinch - 2.

Birds during count week but not on count day: Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Eastern Bluebird.

Comments: It was a wild and windy day, which made finding land birds very challenging. On
the other hand, it produced a spectacular fly-past of seabirds, notably Kittiwakes and
Razorbills. Our estimates of numbers of both are very conservative and many thousands
more of each undoubtedly passed by far out in the mist and rain showers in the morning.
Iceland Gulls were at a record high, almost certainly due to the gale - there was a constant
passage of them into Westport and along the shore at Pea Jack Cove and Northern Point.
Seeing a lone Pomarine Jaeger hurrying by to the SW off Northern Point was a real treat.
This was probably the first count in the 40 official ones done on the island without a single
Junco, although we were pleased to get the first Christmas Count Red-bellied Woodpecker
for Brier Island. Without the alertness of our feeder watchers we would have missed several
species - but where were the Ruby-crowned Kinglet seen the day before, and the four
Bluebirds that were so conspicuous in Carl Haycock's back yard the morning after? One can
never get them all.
