Hi Jim,
many thanks for your very kind words. I have learned quite a bit =
about turtles in N.S. since first seeing that unusual one near the =
downtown Dartmouth stream in August..... By the way, I thoroughly enjoy =
reading your reports, often from The Valley, on NatureNS. What a breadth =
of knowledge of our region's natural history!

Dusan, thanks for raising the issue and stimulating the comments, etc. =
At least where the turtle is now is an opportunity for some more public =
education about alien vs. native turtles and the history of the issue of =
sales of baby turtles in department stores as used to happen, with lots =
of casualties among the reptiles and perhaps also the humans. Maybe the =
wildlife park is already doing educational outreach on this, and perhaps =
also the Oak Lawn Zoo in the Aylesford area, where the baby Blanding's =
turtles are head-started for a couple of years before releases back into =
the wild, where the grown juveniles have better chances of surviving =
than do the hatchlings. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.

Yes, the wording of the "turtle regulations" is pretty tortured. =
It doesn't look like they were written by a lawyer, nor a biologist.... =
I do wonder how often the Deputy Minister of Health grants permissions =
for individuals to keep a turtle.
Incidentally, DNR staff picked up the downtown Dartmouth =
Red-eared Slider at my house.. I do hope that it is enjoying its new =
domicile at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park.

Guess that when they wrote the law, they didn't know that genera =
is the plural of genus.

So the Deputy Minister of Health can give you permission to sell a =
turtle. He might be a good friend to have. He probably has many =
friends. ;-)
