--Boundary_(ID_Xty89yvlMIpFIluTtWa0sg) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT AUG. 13, 2011 - Daytime high tide was at 1:07 p.m. with 11.6 metres of amplitude. Carmela Enzinas and others had mentioned seeing lots of flying shorebirds at Penny/Penney? Beach just south of Avonport Beach during high-tide periods recently and also at Blue Beach. Today I got to Penney Beach 1.5 hours after high tide, and very quickly at 2:35 p.m. a very big flying flock of peeps appeared (from where?) just to our north (Carm & Ernie Enzinas were there, too). I guessed the numbers at perhaps 10,000 as they flew back and forth and landed a bit among the recreators at Avonport Beach. Eventually they mostly flew to the north and then east (perhaps headed for east Evangeline Beach??). I need to add here that the small parking lot for Penny Beach was chock full of cars, but I found room for my car along the edge of the lane into the lot. Thus there were quite a few people and a few dogs that were walking on Penny Beach, which is pretty narrow. This matters because of the flock of about 1000 peeps that tried to roost at the Horton Bluff end of the beach but were repeatedly disturbed and flushed by the people and by their unleashed but well-behaved dogs. I did not talk to any of those people when they came off the beach just as those peeps started to forage on the ebbing shore and then flew away, probably to the west? AUG. 14, 2011 - Wendy Elliott reports on an interesting inland roosting location for our small shorebirds or peeps. At high tide (about 2 p.m.) Wendy was at Pete Luckett's new winery etc. on Wallbrook Mountain south of the Gaspereau River Valley, straight south from Grand Pre, and southeast of Gaspereau. Someone walked to Luckett's famous London-style red phone booth is his very young vineyard with very small young grape vines, and flushed uncounted flocks of peeps that only flew short distances and then roosted again. We wonder how many such roosting locations exist that are inland away from our tidal shores. This probably varies with tidal amplitudes, which wax and wane on a roughly two-week cycle (half of a Lunar month). Today's tidal amplitude was listed at 12.1 metres, which is mediocre (values range this month from 8.2 to 15.2 metres). Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. --Boundary_(ID_Xty89yvlMIpFIluTtWa0sg) Content-type: text/html; CHARSET=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable
<body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; = -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; "><div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; "><font = face=3D"Helvetica" size=3D"3" style=3D"font: 12.0px Helvetica">AUG. = 13, 2011 - Daytime high tide was at 1:07 p.m. with 11.6 = metres of amplitude.
