Saturday, at a BNS outing to watch the Moonrise at the lookoff, I commented that I had not seen an Osprey in many a year in our area. Well yesterday in a bike ride through agricultural fields I encountered an immature Osprey being chased by some red-wings near a pond between Woodville and Lakeville. It circled over me and I had a good look at it. After a few minutes it was gone but I noted that a mob of crows were cawing and harassing something in a distant row of trees. On that same ride, I passed some common milkweed in a field and did a quick survey and found two good sized Monarch caterpillars munching away. I am glad to see there are some surviving in the wild. Our milkweed has been invaded by so many earwigs and spiders that I wonder if eggs and larva have a chance. Our Monarch raising is going well, and we have nine of the caterpillars as pupa at the moment. I video captured a larva several days ago coming out of one of our last eggs. You can see the emerging process on the Nature Nova Scotia facebook page. It took 14 minutes so I sped up the video 4 times to take less that 4 minutes. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Nature-Nova-Scotia/183810795000696 By the way if any naturens contributors want to show images and videos, using our facebook page is an ideal way. You do have to join facebook but then you can put them on the Nature Nova Scotia 'wall'. Larry Bogan Cambridge Station, N.S.
